(NewIndPress).- In an effort to lift the standard of ornamental fish farming sector, which is considered to be one of the fastest growing export industry in the state, the National Aquaculture Society headquartered in Kozhikode is all set to put up a fish farm exclusively for ornamental fish, in Chelannur.
The farm, for which the construction is progressing in three acre area, aims to boost the exporting sector by providing quality fish brood stock to the farmers and through adequate training. “The farm includes three ponds to breed export quality fish stock besides accommodating training centres for the farmers,” said Rajesh P.Makkada, secretary.
Since its inception, the Society has been working with the active support of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), National Fresh Water Development Authority (NFWDA) and Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).
Rajesh said the MPEDA has various plans and subsidies in its kitty to promote the farmers who produce export quality fish. “The farm is expected to make the farmers eligible for such amenities. The export opportunities are immense in the sector,” he said.
According to him, presently the state has been acting as the major contributor in the total export from the country. Demand for fish like Guppy, Moli, Gold Fish, Oscar and Floweron are on a high and they are mostly exported to Gulf countries and Singapore.
The faculties and scientists from CMFRI will provide training, especially on the farming style which is most suitable for the water and weather conditions of the state. “After the primary coaching, if anyone wants to hook on their study to a particular kind of fish or breed, they will be provided facility for that too,” he said. The training will be extended in topics like breeding style of fish, food, diseases, water quality, setting up of aquariums and plants etc.
The aqua show organised by the Society during Malabar Shopping Festival- 2007 was widely acclaimed. Since its inception in 2002 the society has been conducting training classes for the interested persons. This year class will began from May 13 for four days and scientists from CMFRI will take class. Those interested can contact Rajesh : 949590793.
