USA: Study Analyses US Newsprint Representations of Farmed Salmon A new study printed in the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society analyses how US newsprint media coverage of farmed salmon frames public understanding of the risks and benefits of eating farmed salmon.
In "Communicating Risks and Benefits of Aquaculture: A Content Analysis of US Newsprint Representations of Farmed Salmon", authors Shannon Amberg and Troy Hall review five years (2000-2005) of newsprint media coverage of farmed salmon.
With increased public awareness of health and food safety issues, the authors explain how the specific nature of media coverage "can influence whether opinion shifts in a negative or positive direction." The authors warn that "This leads to concerns that consumers may reject certain foods, oppose innovative developments in food production, or even forego known food benefits in hopes of avoiding a potential health or environmental risks."
