Canada: Fisheries scholarship announced for graduating high school students

ST JOHN´S (The Telegram).- The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has created a new fisheries scholarship for post-secondary students in an attempt to raise awareness about the fishing industry in the province’s youth.

The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is graduating high school and planning to continue into post-secondary education in the following fall.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarship must submit a 2,500-word essay describing what he or she feels is the biggest issue facing the province’s fishing industry and provide solutions for how that issue would best be addressed.

The scholarship is being funded through the Sustainable Fisheries and Ocean Policy Division, which is mandated to deal with fisheries science, management and ocean policy issues on behalf of the Provincial Government.

Applications are available online at http://www.fishaq.gov.nl.ca/scholarshipapplication.pdf and are available directly at the regional offices of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The deadline for applications is July 30, 2008.
