Philippines: Aquaculture production up by 50% |

DAVAO (Sun Star).- THE total aquaculture species production in the Davao Region has increased by more than 50 percent during the first quarter of 2008.
Based on a data gathered from the regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 11, aquaculture production gained 76.52 percent more compared to the same period last year.
This means 2,626.6 more metric tons of species were added to the 3,432.4 metric tons produced in the first quarter of 2007.
Milkfish production contributed to this significant increase with 99.41 percent more, seaweeds shared 42.18 percent, tilapia, 19.49 percent.
Total production of milkfish was placed at 4,741.9 metric tons; tilapia, 205.8 metric tons; and seaweeds, 866.6 metric tons.
Bfar said other species produced from aquaculture decreased by 10.27 percent from 272.7 metric tons to 244.7 metric tons during the quarter.
